Youth Leadership Spotlight: Damian M.

From the Classroom to the National Stage

The Civic Education Center is proud to recognize Youth Service Council President Damian M. for a remarkable year of achievement, leadership, and service.

When Damian first joined the Civic Education Center three years ago, he was a quiet and reserved student who rarely sought the spotlight. Through participation in the Youth Service Council, civic learning experiences, civil dialogue programs, leadership development opportunities, and community service projects, he gradually developed the confidence, skills, and experience necessary to become a leader among his peers.

Today, Damian serves as President of the CEC Youth Service Council, helping lead student discussions, represent youth perspectives, mentor fellow students, and encourage civic participation throughout the region. His growth as a leader reflects the mission of the Civic Education Center: empowering young people to find their voice and take meaningful action within their communities.

Through his involvement in CEC programs, Damian earned the California State Seal of Civic Engagement, one of the state's highest recognitions for student civic participation and leadership. He also helped secure a $3,000 grant from the Shinnyo-en Foundation to support a student-led pesticide awareness project designed to educate community members and promote constructive dialogue around issues affecting local agricultural communities.

Most recently, Damian was selected to present at the 37th Annual National Service-Learning Conference® and Points of Light Conference in Washington, D.C. There, he will share the impact of youth voice, civic dialogue, and student-led action through the Civic Education Center Youth Service Council. His presentation will highlight how young people can create meaningful change when they are given opportunities to lead and serve.

Damian's journey demonstrates the power of sustained civic engagement and leadership development. What began as participation in a local youth leadership program has grown into opportunities to lead projects, engage community partners, advocate for important issues, and represent Fresno County on a national stage.

His accomplishments through the Civic Education Center have also been reflected in other areas of his life. While maintaining an impressive 4.55 GPA, Damian has earned recognition through Science Fair, Science Olympiad, and as a member of an award-winning Academic Decathlon team. He recently received his Certificate of Pre-Admission to California State University, Fresno as a Bulldog Bound Scholar for Fall 2027, an honor awarded to only a select number of students from his school. In addition, he was reelected as Chapter Reporter for his FFA chapter, further demonstrating the leadership and communication skills he has developed over the years.

For the Civic Education Center, Damian's story is more than a list of achievements—it is an example of what can happen when students are provided with meaningful opportunities to learn, lead, serve, and engage with their communities. His success reflects the broader impact CEC strives to create in schools across California by helping young people become informed, engaged, and effective leaders.
